Ask a Pol asks:

Do you know where you are on the SAFER Banking Act?

Scott on SAFER:

“I haven’t looked at it,” Sen. Rick Scott exclusively tells Ask a Pol

Scott opposes legalization of cannabis:

“Well, first off, I know that it’s the gateway drug — my brother just died. He just passed away,” Scott tells us. “I didn’t support the legalization of marijuana because I think it’s gonna — it’s a pathway to destructive drugs, which is what it did to my brother.”

So sorry for your loss, sir. — Matt Laslo, on behalf of the Ask a Pol family

Separately: Scott on SCOTUS decision on bump stocks

What do you think of the Supreme Court decision to allow bump stocks given that you signed a bump stock ban in Florida?

“Well, I respect the Supreme Court decision. I think Trump did the right thing [by banning bump stocks], but I think it ought to be done at the state,” Scott says. “The Supreme Court — and I support the Second Amendment; I’m a big Second Amendment supporter — but I don’t think people need to have bump stocks.”

After the 2018 Parkland massacre — which came after the 2016 Pulse Night Club slaughter — then-Gov. Rick Scott took on the NRA and won, which Ask a Pol founder Matt Laslo covered for The Daily Beast at the time.

TRANSCRIPT: Sen. Rick Scott

SCENE: Scott’s answering questions from a scrum of reporters in the basement of the US Capitol, so Laslo waits in the wings until they’re done. He then gets our Ask a Pol exclusive while riding the elevator up to the Senate floor with Scott.

Our recording includes Scott and the scrum, but the Ask a Pol exclusive starts around 2 mins 30 secs.

Reporter: “Should he bring up Biden’s age?”

Rick Scott: “He doesn’t have to. I mean I think everyone already surprised that Biden…(inaudible).”

Reporter: “Okay, thank you.”

Second Reporter: “Have you seen Biden’s recent immigration announcement?”

Rick Scott: “I think it’s a disaster. It’s not fair to people that have come here legally and it’s not enforceable. All it does is it taints the whole immigration process. What he’s done — He’s opened the border, and he’s given them amnesty but he does not give them (inaudible). He doesn’t have a permanent plan. Okay? It’s a mistake what he’s doing, it’s wrong for the country. I’m from the immigration state, I believe in legal immigration and it’s completely unfair to the people who come here legally.”

Reporter: “Is there anything you guys can do to fight this, challenge this. What are the next steps?”

RS: “Well, I’m sure it’s gonna be challenging of course, because it’s not enforceable.”

Reporter: “What would you have liked to see the administration do?”

RS: “Well, I think they ought to sit down with us and one — number one, secure the border, number two, fix our immigration problems. But, ironically enough, I’m the — one of the first things I did was I took to the floor a program to fix the immigration (?system?), and the democrats blocked it twice on the floor cause they don’t want to fix immigration.”

Reporter: “Senator, I’m just wondering about the — Sen. Schumer said he’s gonna bring the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act next probably after the recess — that’s to re-enshrine Roe [vs Wade] as law. That’s not gonna pass, why would he do that do you think?”

RS: “Oh this is posturing. We can’t talk about the border. We can’t talk about the inflation, cause he caused it. We can’t talk about, ‘What a great economy’, cause we don’t have one. (inaudible) You know, try to bring up things that are not gonna pass.”

RS: “Oh, I um — I haven’t looked at it.”

RS: “So…”

ML: “Are you — have you heard from your banks on it though? No, not really?”

RS: “No.”

ML: “So you’re a blank slate?”

RS: “No, I just haven’t.”

ML: “Are you leaning one way or the other?”

Scott shakes head ‘not really.’

ML: “What do you think? Like in Maryland they just expunged, or they just pardoned, a bunch of past marijuana convictions. What do you think about that?”

RS: “Well, first off, I know that it’s the gateway drug — my brother just died. He just passed away.”

ML: “Oh, sorry.”

RS: “He started with…”

Scott to visitors: “Come on. Come on.”

Scott invites Capitol visitors on the elevator.

RS: “…he just…”

Scott loses train of thought.

RS: “I don’t support the legalization of marijuana, because I think it’s gonna — it’s a pathway to destructive drugs, which is what it did to my brother.”

ML: “I’m sorry. Bump stocks — you signed a bump stock ban…”

RS: “Yep.”

ML: “…in Florida. What do you make of the Supreme Court decision?”

RS: “Well, I respect the Supreme Court decision. I think Trump did the right thing, but I think it ought to be done at the state.”

ML: “Yeah, and so…”

RS: “The Supreme Court — and I support the Second Amendment; I’m a big Second Amendment supporter — but I don’t think people need to have bump stocks.”

ML: “Yeah? And what do you make — with the Supreme Court ruling won’t impact Florida…”

RS: “That’s my understanding, yeah.”

ML: “Yeah. But, what do you make of them saying that these devices that allow, what, like 800 bullets a minute or something like that, that they aren’t machine guns?”

RS: “Well, I mean it’s different but I respect the Supreme Court’s decision.”

ML: “Yeah. Preciate ya.”

RS: “Bye.”

ML: “Have a good one, sir.”
